CAN Accessibility Statement

Below you will find an explanation of the features we've designed into the website to help aid in the ease of use and navigability for all our users.

Search

A single field search form is included in the header of each page to allow you to seek information that may be difficult to locate within the site hierarchy. A greater degree of control is available using the more Advanced Search page.

In-page Links

At the top of each page on the site is a link to bypass all the navigation links and header content and get directly to the body of the page. Selecting this link offers a fast way to avoid this repetitive content once you have navigated to the desired page. Additionally, there is a "return to top" link at the bottom of each page that will allow you to jump back to the beginning. Pages containing long lists have links embedded in the list items to allow users to return to the top of the list after each item.

Resizeable Text

The font sizes on the site have been designed to allow for a reasonable amount of formatting using your browsers internal layout manipulation tools. Most modern browsers allow you to zoom the text, and we've facilitated this with a layout that does not become unreadable when using large and extra-large font sizes.

Consistent Headings

The site's use of HTML headings follows a distinct hierarchy so that screen reader users can scan pages by jumping from heading. H1 and H2 are used by the header elements, H3 is the title of the page, H4 is used for headings or sections within in the body a given document, H5 is used for subheadings, and H6 is used for hidden structural text.

Hidden Structural Text

A small number of cues to the page structure have been hidden within the code of the site to announce to screen readers when they have reached the end of an article, are approaching a menu, or have additional options.

PDF and Printer Friendly Formats, and Audio Content

All the articles in our Resources and Services sections can be downloaded in PDF format or viewed in a simplified printer friendly format. Some of the Cultural Access News content is available in a WMA audio format for people who are blind.

Access Keys

The CAN website makes use of some access keys to help users with screen readers or other assistive devices navigate easily from page to page. The site-wide accesskeys we've defined are as follows:

N:
Skip Navigation Links (go directly to main content of a page )
T:
Return to Top (go back to the top of the current page )
1:
Return to Site Homepage
2:
About Us
3:
Arts Events
4:
Services
5:
Resources
6:
Contact Us
S:

Additionally, the accesskey J can be used on the search form to jump to the submission button.

High Contrast and Large Print Layouts

High Contrast and Large print Layout are in development and should be available soon. We thank you for your patience.

Web Standards

This site has made extensive use of web standards wherever possible to ensure that the content is rendered accurately and consistently across different computing platforms and on different browser software. We encourage users to use a standards compliant web browser such as Firefox, Opera, or Safari to ensure the best experience. Not all of the pages on this site are XHTML strict, and in some cases, user generated content will cause pages in the events section to fail validation, however the best practices for designing with XHTML and CSS have been put into place, and most pages validate to the formal grammars and published standards.
